LEarn to use A Sewing Machine

Maeve’s Beginner Sewing Machine Course

Meet Maeve Fanning

Welcome to Maeve’s Beginner Sewing Machine Course!

Hello, I’m Maeve

I have developed this online sewing machine course to help you get started on your sewing journey. It covers the basics of learning how to use a machine – threading the machine, changing a needle, basic stitches, buttonholes, zips, how to make your first simple projects.

This course will be aimed at total beginners – if you can’t get to a sewing class you will have a bunch of videos on hand to walk you through those initial steps to get you on your sewing journey.

1. Introducing the Singer Tradition Sewing Machine.

In this first video I’ll show you what to look out for in your new sewing machine and how to set it up. The Machine used in this series is the Singer Tradition often sold by Aldi and Lidl but is very similar to many entry level sewing machines.

2. How to thread the Singer Tradition Sewing Machine.

In this second video I’ll show you how to thread your new sewing machine, how to wind the bobbin and how to insert the bobbin and prepare your machine for sewing.
The Machine used in this series is the Singer Tradition often sold by Aldi and Lidl but is very similar to many entry level sewing machines.

Supplies List:
Pins & Needles
Thread
Printed Cotton Fabric
Plain Cotton Fabric

3. Changing a Needle on the Singer Tradition Sewing Machine.

In this video I’ll show you how to change a needle in your new sewing machine, once you are sewing regularly you will need to change a needle for a few reasons.

You can break a needle while sewing, different fabrics require different sizes and types of needles (more on that later), and after using a needle for a while (some say 8 hours or after every project!) it wears out and loses its sharpness so it must be replaced.

For our purposes of this course – a size 12 universal needle is fine (the needles that come with the machine).
